Old Chest, New Chest

It was a wonderful weekend the weather was beautiful so a friend and I headed up to Rocky Mount about an hour and a half from home to estate sale on Saturday. We found a few good things which I will show you later, but today I wanted to share a redo of a chest my brother built and gave me about 37 years ago. It was originally used for a toy box. He made it for me because as a teen I had always wanted a hope chest but never was fortunate enough to have one. so being a great brother he made one for me after I got married.

Here is a pic of the chest after two children and five grandchildren using it as a toy box.

Still beautiful but a little beat up.. stickers had been put on top, many scrapes and dents.

After the first coat of Annie Sloan White, I decided on a stencil to add a bit of character. Can you see the old handles below on the right?

I decided to take the stencil to another level and make it somewhat dimensional with plastic wood. Not the best choice in products to make a stencil stand out. I will be looking into other products if I ever try this again.

Remember I said I decided on another handle for the side? Here is the before. Of course I had started painting on them.

Nope these wouldn't work but maybe these would ..

I picked these babies up right after our estate sale trip. Of course we needed to stop by Hobby Lobby!

I love them!

Next deciding on a fabric. I decided the ticking would be more suited for my project.

I added a layer of foam and batting. Once the fabric was on I put a strip of trim around the edge.

Happy Easter!

What a beautiful day this Easter was. The weather was perfect for the grandkids to have their egg hunt. Such a good time for them. While I enjoy the décor and coming of spring, the true meaning of Easter, of course is the empty tomb. An empty tomb which gives us a beautiful gift of eternal life.

Wishing everyone a very Happy Easter!

Christmas Trees

Christmas is my favorite holiday.. But because I am lazy I have put off putting up my living room tree for several years. So this year I decided to pull out the ornaments and ask hubby to get us a real tree. As usual for him he returned with the most beautiful tree.. perfectly shaped. Of course then the trip to the attic to find all the many boxes of ornaments.. There was a total of six boxes.. you know those larger Rubbermaid containers.. So excited I unpack and decorate the tree.. after hours I finished.. I stepped back and .. whew.. it was terrible.. my ornaments looked dated.. my ribbon looked terrible. A late call in the evening to a friend, "will you ride with me to Carolina Pottery"? An hour each was but she agrees. I replaced the gold angels and some other gold ornaments and replaced them with burlap flowers, some filler for the top and new ribbons. Love it! Updated new tree for me.. I guess the ornaments may have not been that bad but I had been using the same ones for 15 years.. guess it was time for a change. I just love the new tree.

Then I moved on to the kitchen tree.. a tree I have been collecting ornaments for for 6 years with one of my Granddaughters. The whole tree has to do with eating and baking.. Except for one wooden teddy bear that my Grandma painted and gave me in the 80's.

Some homemade stockings and ready!
I do have a few more decorations but been to lazy to take pics.. getting to be a habit. :)

What is the story with your trees? New, old meaningful?

Merry Christmas!

It was a Happy Birthday

Yesterday was my birthday. I have to say I was dreading it.. not really into the whole birthday thing since I have gotten older. I mean it's just another day right? Getting older, another year, presents, and cake. Well this year things took a turn and  proved me wrong.. it is not what it is about. I took the day to reflect on my blessings. I am the mother of two beautiful girls that have given me 5 (FIVE) beautiful grandchildren! All the sudden my small family of four has become a beautiful family of 11. What a wonderful thing, huh?

I also have been blessed with an wonderful hobby or as most would say talent of sewing.. take a look at these cookies my daughter made for me!!! How amazing are these?

I have my health, my home. I have the hope of a miracle drug coming forward that will change life as we know it now in the next coming year. (more to come about that)

We did have a birthday celebration .. we had a wonderful dinner out, there were great presents, cookies (beautiful cookies).. but most of all it was a time to enjoy family and  reflect on how much the Lord has blessed me. I think this year was the year to change what a birthday means to me. It will no longer be about an aging process, a cake, or presents.. it will now be a celebration of what a wonderful life I have and the wonderful things to come.

Decorating for Halloween

I have come to believe I am a terrible blogger. I have not posted since last spring! Somehow for me holding down a full time job and blogging don't mesh together so well. I did however, finally put out my Halloween decorations and wanted to share them with you.

Well not so much Halloween, but I wanted to show you what you can do with a few things from Michaels to spruce things up for the season.

Now here we go..

Are these two guys adorable or what?

Mum, you want some coffee? OK>>> I know that was corny.

Dollar Tree sign.. good deal huh?

I found this glass bowl at an antique fair.. it had a small chip in it that was glued back in, but for $10 I thought it was a deal.. in perfect condition these babies bring a pretty penny.

Kind of hard to see this candy corn guy. My cousin made him for me.. talents!

Do you ever wonder how on earth you are so blessed? I do.... I am so thankful the Lord allows me to have such pretty things in life to enjoy. So that is my round up of Halloween... Hopefully, I can get some pics up of the yard before the fall season is over. Thanks so much for stopping by. I'll be taking a peek at what you guys have been up to. Have a blessed week.
