A sneak peak

My plans to have pictures ready of my table setting didn't pan out today, but I am going to just give you a sneak peak at the china I used.  This china was a gift from my Father in Law. I had admired the set at my in laws china cabinet on a visit to them a few years ago. My Father in Law told me it was a gift to him from a neighbor many years ago. She had handed it down to him when she was in her 90's. So when the china arrived in NC from Maine I was thrilled. I really have not received another gift from them that has meant more to me. Not only did I love the china but I am grateful that this special gift given to him would be handed down to me. This china is the pattern Japan by J & G Meakin. Meakin begin producing it in1890. It is a green and white transfer ware that is edged in gold.

It's a rainy stormy day here in NC, so I have had time to go thru some cards I wanted to share with you. I just love old cards, books, and prints. They are so different from what you can get these days. I also have a large collection of postcards I want to share with you soon. Remember I said my husband's grandfather worked for the railroad? The post cards are a collection of cards he sent to his son while traveling. These greating cards are from both sides of the family.
The best one for the day is the Shower card.

Birds and Bunnies

So today I wanted to stay home and work on my blog. However my granddaughter had a follow up appointment at Duke and the choice of the day became clear to me.. what would be the most important thing for me when I look back on my life? My granddaughter of course? Right? Her appointment was an answer to prayer. At four years old she works harder at her health than I ever have in my life. She is truly my hero. So if my blog is not the greatest today.. it will be OK. Sophie I love you with all my heart.

I wanted to share a pic of a linen hand towel I embroidered last year for the spring. I used my Bernina (I love that machine) I found the pattern at http://www.oregonpatchworks.com/. They have every designer you can think of.

You can hardly see where it has unraveled.. right? Right?

It's OK I still love the towel.. I cut my threads too short.. something you will not do but a couple of times until you learn the hard way.

I love it with the bird candle sticks (remember those from the thrift store?) Not a bad $5. The silver tray is also from the thrift store... I think it was around $3. 

Wanted you to be able to see the stitch detail on him. Doesn't he say welcome Spring?

The Fix

Remember the lamp I bought from GW and couldn't figure out where to put it or what kind of shade to use?

I got lots of great suggestions from you guys... some of which I still plan to use on another lamp shaped similar. I think  sometimes you may just need to look at things a while (and obsess about it) .. I know some of you guys do that too..  So I did some moving around..  ok a lot of moving around.. and finally think I  figured it out.. in fact I love the new arrangement and the new shade!

Yesterday I went to Home Goods to take back the shade .. the one I had on the smaller lamp.. and low and behold there it was!... the perfect shade.. I love the way it looks... I am so excited.. I love a  $7.00 lamp.. I have to tell you guys in blog land, I would have never thought of a shade like this before blogging, or thrifting for a lamp as a matter of fact... I get such great ideas and inspiration from you guys... not to mention it helps to look at pics of your rooms.. don't you think?.. when I posted the pics, I noticed it looked a little off on that side of the room.. It bothered me..( I think about stuff like that in bed when I should be going to sleep) that's when it occurred to me I had a great piece in the back hall .. (which was way too crowded) Then of course I had to convince hubs that it is a good idea to move the furniture.. you know what I mean... yep I got the big sigh .. and the "you think" but he did it.. yeah..

Don't you think that looks better? I hope so.. I think It opened the room up.. still have to do some touching up on the paint.. oops .. Can you believe I had that piece of furniture in a back hall at the laundry and garage? I think I am going to distress it.. It was a family piece that I hated until we painted it a while back.. then instant love. Wish I had before pics.

Took a while to decide how to fill the hutch..

Cute bear book huh? It was $1.00 at the thrift store..the doll was made as a gift to me from my cousin.. she is adorable.. the Wee Folks Old Testament book is passed down from family.. I love all of these things together.

Most everything in the hutch is thrift finds.. the pic on top, the pitcher and the sugar bowl.. Pretty cheap makeover...
Here is the dresser (yep it was a Victorian dresser with a marble top .. it has one of those wildly ornate mirrors) I think the mirror is just too large and too much for our home so I decided to take it off and use the dresser like this..

The tea set was an eBay find.. anyway.. I like this side of the room better in the room like this .. Hope you do.. Oh yea, the little lamp is somewhere else..still not sure about her shade but I am sure I will keep thinking about it ...(in bed when I should be sleeping) Oh yea still working on the frame and the print.

Anybody know what this is?

I wanted to share these dessert pieces but here's my proble .. I don't know what the heck they are. I know you guys are pretty savy about china out there in the bloggin world so I thought I would ask  if anybody could fill me in. The peices were passed down in the family and I have had them for years but have no idea about their history. There is no markings on the backs of them. If I were a betting woman I would guess they were promotional.. I remember my Mom buying laundry detergent and getting peices of china or glasses in them.. Can you believe that? It was fun to help her dig the pieces from the bottom of the white powder to see what peice she got with her purchase. The detergent made pretty good packing material... I never saw her get a broken peice. It could have been any peice of the pattern.. always a surprise.  

  

Anybody else remember that, or am I like a dinosar in the blogging world?

The silver came from my husbands grandparents.. there is not a complete set.. it is Remebrance by Roger Bros.

Here is a close up so you can see the gold trim.

I think the pattern is so pretty..

The inside of the cups have the flower design very delicate.



So any takers.. I would love to know the name of this and the history..

I just had to share what it looks like here in NC today.. it is a little cool but beautiful!

Our neighborhood was lined in these but the storms over the years have claimed a lot of them.
They are a weak tree.. I am surprised ours is still standing.

I am enjoying seeing all the trees and flowers begin to bloom.. Spring is on the way!

Bunny love

I love bunnies! Any chance I get to buy a bunny I do.. so I recently picked up this bunny and chick from Joannes for about $1.50 .. they had a bright finish.. I really love those little bunnies and chicks that have the retro look but they can be a bit pricey, so I decided to dress these up a bit.

The first thing I did was to (dirty) them up a bit .. I used some watered down brown acrylic paint. I am not particular about the paint... last week I found some at Joannes on sale for .50 cent. Next I put some more glitz on them.. they had some glitter on them when I bought them..  Next I put a thin coat of watered down Elmer's glue, and sprinkled them with Glitter .  I found the glue too thick without the water and the glitter tends to clump up.

This really give a nice sheen like the retro ones.

Did you ever notice how the retro Easter and spring decorations always sit on something...hummm

Can you believe I re-purposed these?

Yep that's an empty ribbon spool! I sew and was keeping my latest spools thinking they would come in handy to wrap extra ribbon on..

gave them a coat of paint on top but left the inside of spools alone..

Then some more glue and glitz.. hot glued them to the top and presto, retro spring for $3.50!! I like that..

Now for this guy

You know those chocolate plastic bunnies? Well that is what this guy started off as.. I have had him for years.. he even has a chew mark on one of his ears from a little dog  Joy.. special memories. .. we had Joy for 13 years.. oh well that is a different story. I slapped a coat of antique white acrylic paint on him.. and you guessed it glued and glitz him.. I glued him on one of those pressed cardboard boxes from Michael's after I painted it rose pink and glittered it.. I think the box was around $2.. I dabbed some brown for his eyes.. used some ribbon I have had for years... Oh yeah the pink flower around his neck is an old earring that my mother in law passed down to me. 

I am happy with the outcome.. I think with practice I can get better at this.. hmmm.. do they make cardboard houses? I think I need to buys some more. .. what do you think?
